As you learned in this module, Netiquette encompasses many types of behavior. It includes everything from the rules of common courtesy to proper formatting of email and listserv messages, virus-checking of attachments, and keeping our messages concise and complete.
Netiquette also involves ethics. What do we call ethics on the Internet? Why, "nethics," of course! The State of Victoria, Australia Department of Education, Employment & Training Sofweb site defines nethics as ". . . ethics on the net. It is about behaving as legally and honorable in cyberspace as you would in real time." To see more of their guide to language on the Internet, click on Buzzwords.
The Computer Ethics Institute has published their Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics. Although they all are important, the 10th commandment sums up the others nicely: "Thou shalt use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect." A good online citizen, or Netizen, could be described then as a person who is considerate, responsible, and ethical while online. Netizens encourage the use of netiquette and nethics by new and experienced users alike.
Since many children are more experienced cybernauts than their parents, many parents are concerned for their children's safety while online. Since the Internet may feel like a "magic" place to children, parents should stress the importance of honesty, respect, and responsibility online. To assist parents in their efforts, the Children's Partnership with the National PTA and the National Urban League has published a helpful guide entitled, "Right and Wrong Online--Teaching Your Children Ethics in Cyberspace." This publication can be found at Children's Partnership.
