WebCT Activity #8
Small Group Discussion

A small group discussion works like the regular Discussions feature except that only designated students can participate. When you are ready to participate in a group, ask your instructor to assign you to a group (or team).

Steps for Posting a Message

1.From the Communication Tools page, click on the Discussion icon.

2.Click on the small group title your instructor has assigned you (this example is Team 1).
3.Sample list of discussion topics and postings.Click on the first posting (it should be from your instructor). It will contain your discussion topic and other instructions.

7.Click on the Compose Discussion Message link.
8.Compose and post your message. (If you've forgotten how, review the WebCT Activity #3 - Discussion instructions.)

Steps for Checking your Message

Since this is a 'private' discussion (for a small group of students), it is important to verify if you have posted to your small group or to the whole class. To check your posting, follow the instructions below.

1.Click the Update Listing link and check the list of postings to your small group, or team. You should see the message you posted to your small group. If you do not see it, you probably posted to the Main discussion area.
2.Sample Select Topic listing with Main highlightedClick on the arrow next to Select topic and select Main to show postings to the whole class. You should not see any postings to your small group. [If you do, re-post correctly and ask your instructor to delete the message posted to the main discussion area.
3.Click on the Select topic arrow one more time and select All. You should see all postings to the main discussion area and to your small group.
4.Reply to the postings of your small group members (or post them a message of encouragement, if they have not yet joined the discussion).
