Course Contents and Materials

The activities below will teach you how to find the various course materials and how to use some of the WebCT Tools. (Some WebCT tools are not used in this course.) As you do the activities, write the answers to the questions in your booklet or on scratch paper. You will need them later. Each question is worth 1 point.

 

Exploring Course Content and Materials

1.If you have not already done so, click on the Course Content and Materials icon or link on the homepage. The Course Content and Materials page contains links to documents that you may either print or read on screen. You may have been given some of this material in printed form.
2.Click on the Syllabus link (shown below) and then scroll down through the syllabus.
The Syllabus briefly describes the course and its requirements, and gives you contact information.

3.Click on Course Content and Materials on the menu bar.

4.Remember the location of the Calendar. You will return to this at another time.
5.Click on Intro WebCT. . There is a list of nine items. The first item entitled "WebCT Introduction" you completed when you created your WebCT ID and password, and entered the course site.

Exploring the Action Menu

Notice the Action Menu in the upper one-third of the screen. The WebCT Tools described below are found in this Action Menu. Most, but not all, of these tools are available in each content page.
Goals are the objectives of the lesson and answer the question - What will I learn from the lesson? The glossary is a collection of words and definitions your instructor has chosen to put online. You can take notes on each lesson and save them. You can review your notes later, edit or delete them. The search feature allows you to search through the course materials for specified word(s).

The tools featured here are suggested for use during this course. Other tools may be used for other courses.
 
1.With WebCT Activity #1 on the computer screen, click on Glossary in the Action Menu, then click on View All.

2.Click on Refresh , in the Action Menu, to return to WebCT Activity #1. Refresh reloads the current page of content.
3.Click on Search; select All Content Module Text from the drop down menu of the Search box. In the Contents box, type the word "computer," then click on the Search button. You will be shown a list of documents that include the word "computer" in their content.

You can search All, All Content Module Text, Table of Contents, Headings and Discussion Articles.

5.Click on Refresh to return to WebCT Activity #1.
6.Click on Goals.

Exploring Taking Notes

1.Click on Take Notes .
2.Click on Add (or Edit).

3.Type yourself a note relating to WebCT Activity #1.Add Notes: WebCT Activitie #1 - Course Content and Materials
4.Click on Update
5.Click on Close to return to WebCT Activity #1. The notes you take for each lesson are automatically saved and labeled with that lesson's title.
6.Once more, click on Take Notes, then View All to view your note.
7.Click on the Return to Notes link, then on Close to return to WebCT Activity #1.
 

You have completed WebCT Activity #1 and are ready to learn about sending messages to your instructor and other students in the course in WebCT Activity #2 - Discussions.

You will send the answers to the questions in WebCT Activity #1 at the end of WebCT Activity #6.
 
 
 

When you are ready to do WebCT Activity #2

  • If you have a printed booklet, click on the Course Content and Materials link (in the upper one-third of the screen), then turn the page in booklet to WebCT Activity #2. (As you have seen, the WebCT Activities 2-8 in the booklet are also online, but it may be easier to do them from the printed booklet.)

  • If you do not have a printed booklet, click on WebCT's Next link (in the Action Menu) to go forward to WebCT Activity #2.
